What are the likely challenges that an organization encounters in building its future leadership pipeline?

SL There are three challenges that an organization encounters in developing its leadership pipeline.

The first is that you need a long term planning horizon, because leadership does not develop overnight. It takes many years to grow leaders and that needs a long term perspective. It is getting harder and harder to have such a long term perspective because most organizations are focused on managing the immediate and urgent.

Second, if you do that, and develop great processes for developing good leaders – the way the Tata Administrative Services did, or the way GE does, you do become the poaching ground for everyone else. So you will lose many of the leaders you develop to other organizations. And you have to be okay with that.
