Make Workplaces Truly More Human and Empathetic
Companies should review their culture and leadership practices beyond the gimmick of being a great place to work. The leader has to be a nurturer.

How prevalent do you believe work overload pressure is in today’s workplace?

PJ At an oversimplified level, work overload exists in many workplaces. Rising salary costs, the need to optimise expenses, frequent business oscillations, average workforce competence, poor workforce planning, and below-threshold managerial competence and leadership inspiration have all combined to create the mess. So many firms are in the throes of load-up-the-mules syndrome.

And yet there are nuances between industries, firms, and managers. Some have a better work design. Their talent is better. The workload is better apportioned. There is less social loafing in these teams. Managers are empathetic and know when to stop pushing the envelope. There is better technological support to take some drudgery out of the daily grind. These places then have better work pressure.

So, while unfortunately work hours have crept into home hours, and there is little respect for personal time, with many leaders, how much of an overload one wants to accept is...
