Many of us have gone through very stressful times during the covid crisis, such as searching for an ambulance to take a family member to hospital & then finding a bed at the hospital etc., some of us have even suffered the loss of a loved one to the pandemic. While we keep hearing that when going gets tough, the tough get going, there are two different views about the impact of this experience of anxiety on us:Gustave Le Bon. In his book, The Psychology of the Masses, who represents the traditional view of human behaviour during a crisis, contends that during a crisis “man descends several rungs in the ladder of civilization”. But according to historian Rutger Bregman, the author of Humankind: A Hopeful History, “it is when crisis hits – when the bombs fall or the floodwaters rise-that we humans become our best selves.
