IR is integral part of HR
It should be priority of the organisations to develop people management skills in line/HR managers to avoid any unpleasant scenario and resolve the matters at early stage.

What reasons do you attribute to the fact that Industrial relation skills which was considered as one of the most desired and pre requisite skill for any HR person to succeed, has now become almost extinct?

RM Following the economic reforms initiated in 1991 in India, most enterprises, both in the manufacturing and the service sectors, rechristened their Personnel Management Department as Human Resources Management Department. More importantly, they also adopted a strategy to engage largely officers so as to avoid employing blue collar and white-collar workers. If there were blue-collar and white-collar workers, they devised ways of reducing their numbers by various means, especially through voluntary retirement schemes and engaging work force through alternate means including contract labour.
Post 1991 several activities of organisations got automated, as well as outsourced. This also led to a situation of reduction in dealings with trade unions and workers....

Dr. Rajen Mehrotra is Past President of Industrial Relations Institute of India (IRII), Former Senior Employers' Specialist for South Asian Region with International Labour Organization (ILO), Former Corporate Head of HR with ACC Ltd. and Former Corporate Head of Manufacturing and HR with Novartis India Ltd. He was also an Independent Director on the Board of Novartis India Ltd. from 2000 to 2020 (20 years). He continues to maintain close links with the academic world as a visiting faculty with some of the Indian Institute of Management.
