With the festive rush just around the corner, e-commerce companies are gearing up for a massive hiring spree of gig workers and contractual workforce to meet the growing demand
The e-commerce industry is poised for a 35% surge in sales during the upcoming festive season, a substantial leap from the previous year. This remarkable growth underscores the sector’s robust expansion and consumers’ increasing confidence in online shopping. To cater to this escalating demand during the festive rush, e-commerce companies are gearing up to hire additional personnel. This includes onboarding 10 lakh gig workers and 2.5 lakh contractual staff, ensuring seamless operations and timely deliveries.
All major quick commerce companies are expanding into new cities and diversifying their offerings beyond groceries, including electronics, beauty, home decor, wellness, and other general merchandise. This diversity demonstrates the firms’ capacity to address varied consumer requirements. Unlike kiranas, which only sell bare essentials, these rapid commerce enterprises operate as online supermarkets, offering a diverse range of merchandise. Additionally, they provide unique categories focused on festivals, adjusting their inventory to meet seasonal demand. Having achieved a milestone of 20 lakh orders per day during the last financial year, March 24 , the industry aims to surpass this record during the upcoming festive season.
Mr. Balasubramanian A, Senior VP and Business Head at TeamLease Services, highlighted, “This festive season, e-commerce will drive sales and fuel job creation on a massive scale. With 10 lakh gig workers and 2.5 lakh contractual staff to be employed, the e-commerce sector’s role in employment generation will be significantly impacted. This hiring boom not only underlines the sector’s critical role in creating jobs but also its substantial contribution to India’s vision of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2025. Projections indicate that by 2026, the inclusive nature of the sector will be evident, with tier 2, 3, and 4 cities and rural India driving more than 60% of the demand for e-commerce.
The National Logistics Policy, an effort to improve cost-effectiveness and logistical efficiency by streamlining deliveries to remote areas, is one of the government’s driving forces behind this trend. During the holiday season, the strategy has an especially big impact since it assures prompt and effective order delivery across the country.
As the demand for e-commerce services continues to surge, It is observed that e-commerce companies are stepping up to the plate. They are gearing up to hire for multiple roles, including delivery personnel, warehouse workers, and customer service representatives, as well as roles in packaging, labeling, quality control, and order fulfillment. This preemptive strategy reassures all stakeholders by guaranteeing that the sector is well-prepared to manage the expected festive seasonal spike, maintain seamless operations and timely deliveries.
