The debate over whether to remain in a job for a set period versus seeking new opportunities is ongoing, with no definitive answer to how long one should stay in a job. Job changes are often individual decisions, driven either by personal goals or by new opportunities within or outside an organisation.
In my twenty-year career, I’ve experienced multiple job changes and changes in role within one organisation, driven by a desire to explore new challenges, align with personal interests, or address family priorities. Such changes often faced criticism from those who value job stability, particularly from the Baby Boomer and early Generation X cohorts. However, the notion of staying in a job for stability’s sake, at the cost of satisfaction, work-life balance, or mental well-being, may not be beneficial for either the individual or the organisation. In today’s job market, where opportunities are abundant, it’s reasonable to seek new roles that provide greater professional satisfaction and personal peace.
