High competition in the workforce gives a feeling that every extra effort counts conditioning them to feel guilt and shame when they don't fit in with the societal norms of performance hence when someone fails to meet a target or deadline, it lowers their self-esteem.

How prevalent do you believe work overload pressure is in today’s workplace?

AS In today’s fast-paced world, where there is high competition and a race to “succeed” in a career (read as reaching the top echelons of the hierarchy), employees believe that the only way to succeed to take on more work, sacrificing personal life and disrupting work-life balance. On the other hand, employers have unrealistic performance expectations, and expect long working hours coupled with heavy workloads to leave employees mentally and physically exhausted. The 24 x 7 digital connectivity, with the expectation to respond on real real-time basis, overwhelms the employees and makes it almost impossible to disconnect from work life. Some toxic managers believe that being brash is the only way to get the work done causing hostile work environments. If all this is not enough, poor interpersonal relationships and workplace politics further cause strain in mental health.
