Absorption of Contract Labour and regularization of temporary employees in Public Employment
The Supreme Court in recent times has chosen to discourage the absorption of temporary employees or employees working on daily wage basis in various public sector undertakings.

The genesis of the issue of absorption/regularization of temporary employees stems from employment/engagement of persons, casual and adhoc basis by the employers. When the industrial activity has grown necessitating engagement of employees on daily wages on shorter projects or on adhoc assignment, the engagement of such temporary employees or daily wage employees for a short-term purpose has been felt necessary in view of industrial needs and development. This practice of engagement/employment of persons on temporary basis in different forms with utter disregard to the statutory rules of recruitment and selection in Government and public sector establishments and continuing them as such for years without any proper justification led to unnecessary litigation leading to demands for absorption/regularization in public employment.
