Why the element of empathy has gained importance in the workplace post covid phase and how it impacts the work culture?

SL Empathy at the workplace has always been important. Every organisation and its leaders should acknowledge it. Incidentally, it is also the first value that gets dropped when things get tough or difficult; it is treated as a luxury. During difficult times, conducting conflict resolution and negotiation from a space of empathy is given a pass. Organisations don’t always recognize the need to build it into their DNA.

The pandemic and the consequent remote working have simply magnified the need and also highlighted that we cannot relegate empathy to the backseat. Unstructured work and unforeseen phenomena demand fresh thinking and non-routine responses. It requires understanding each other’s realities and creatively solving problems that society has not witnessed before. We need to be more mindful of the fact that the home and the office are pretty much the same space for our team members.
