A leader might've had a bad day and in that emotional state, he could end up showing a complete lack of empathy, which he might not have otherwise.
Practicing empathy is important as it ensures enhanced performance, particularly in today's workforce and improves the perceived effectiveness.

Obama was more specific : “The biggest deficit that we have in our society and in the world right now is an empathy deficit. We are in great need of people being able to stand in somebody else’s shoes and see the world through their eyes”. However, in the workplace, people had been so caught up with deadlines, operational stress, P& L responsibilities, conflict resolutions, etc. that at times there was less focus on empathy.
