Because of having a transformative force, automation in HR systems and processes will penetrate more and more in near future. It is already underway. Sometimes, using technology and shifting to automation seems like a rat race. Whenever new tech tools are developed and applied to increase efficiency as a whole, apprehension about the elimination of human element is always raised but historical shreds of evidence indicate that due to technological advancements and automation humans are not replaced but the skills are. New skills took over the older style of working which heavily revolved around manual working. Automation in other processes is different from HR function, the foundation of which rests on people for the people by the people. So, thinking of eliminating the Human element from this function by shifting to automation would be a mistake because this function inherently involves face-to-face interactions. decision-making in complex situations and deep interweaving with organizational culture.

Most organizations are using artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in HR and no doubt it has its benefits too, but any technology also brings risks with its benefits. So is in the AI case here. What HR has to do in such a scenario? The risk of possible job losses can be mitigated by preparing people to reskill or upskill. Machine learning models and algorithms that power AI can be subject to bias if the data on which such models are trained is not qualitative. The growing dependence on Automation certainly carries the risk of replacing the human touch with algorithms. Automated processes cannot comprehend the nuances of human behaviour and emotions. There will always be a risk of getting employees disengaged and disconnected while interacting with tech tools in difficult situations where they need empathy and compassion.

Over-reliance on automation in HR may lead to dehumanizing the workplace. It may diminish human interaction initially and slowly lead to a complete loss of connect. Tech tools can’t provide emotional support which is very vital for any organization to remain vibrant. Automation in HR needs careful thinking as to how much this function should go with automation and the use of AI. People should always be put ahead of technology and automation. Losing sight of the fact that the people are at the core of the organization, will bring very negative results.
