Karnataka govt withholds bill mandating job quota for locals

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Wednesday temporarily withheld a Bill mandating quota in jobs for the local candidates, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s office said in a statement. “The draft bill intended to provide reservations for Kannadigas in private sector companies, industries, and enterprises is still in the preparation stage. A comprehensive discussion will be held in the next cabinet meeting to make a final decision,” the CM said on X, reported Indian Express.

The Karnataka Cabinet had recently cleared the Bill mandating industries, factories and other establishments to appoint 50 per cent of local candidates in management categories and 75 per cent in non-management categories. According to the copy of the Bill, candidates to whom reservation would be provided in management and non-management categories would either have to possess a secondary school certificate with Kannada as language or should pass a Kannada proficiency test as specified by the nodal agency.

Earlier today, Siddaramaiah deleted his X post on the state Cabinet approving legislation that made it mandatory for all private industries to hire only Kannadigas in group ‘C’ and ‘D’ jobs. In his post, Siddaramaiah wrote, “The Cabinet meeting held yesterday approved a bill to make it mandatory to hire 100 per cent Kannadigas for “C and D” grade posts in all private industries in the state. It is our government’s wish that the Kannadigas should avoid being deprived of jobs in the land of Kannada and should be given an opportunity to build a comfortable life in the motherland. We are a pro-Kannada government. Our priority is to look after the welfare of Kannadigas.”
